Forget everything you know about screens. Transparent digital displays aren’t just futuristic—they’re here and available at Skratch®. They don’t hide behind bezels or blend into the background. They stare you down while showing you the world behind them. It’s digital dominance with nothing to hide. Unlike ordinary displays, Transparent OLEDs used as windows can function like conventional glass to provide a sense of open space.
Types of Transparent Display Technologies:
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode)
Self-emissive pixels mean no backlight is needed.
Offers high contrast and vibrant colors.
Common in high-end applications like smart windows and concept TVs.
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display):
Requires a backlight, which limits transparency.
More affordable but less vivid than OLED.
MicroLED:
Emerging tech with high brightness and efficiency.
Promises better transparency and scalability.
Example of technology application:
South Korea leveled up its public transit game. The newly launched Great Train eXpress (GTX) subway service has rolled out a bold new feature: 55-inch transparent OLED displays embedded directly into the train cabin windows. Yes, you read that right—your window is now a screen and this is not scientific fiction.
The concept is simple but powerful: turn passive windows into dynamic digital surfaces. These transparent OLEDs deliver real-time content—news, weather, transit updates, entertainment—without blocking the view outside. It’s a seamless blend of utility and aesthetics designed to create a “comfortable and smart on-board experience.”
The inaugural deployment includes 16 OLED panels across eight cars on the GTX line running between Suseo and Dongtan. And this is just the beginning. GTX plans to install these displays across its entire fleet, transforming every ride into a high-tech journey.
Running at speeds over 150 km/h, these trains aren’t exactly gentle. To ensure the OLEDs can handle the ride, engineers used special tempered glass that’s resistant to shocks and vibrations.
While this is Korea’s first in-cabin OLED deployment, it’s not the first time transparent displays have popped up in the subway. In late 2023, Seoul’s Metropolitan Government launched a pilot program at Myeong-dong Station, featuring an AI-powered translation service for tourists. The interface? A transparent 55" LG OLED screen that lets travelers communicate with subway staff in real time.
The pilot was a hit, and Seoul Metro expanded the service to 11 stations across the city, making the subway more accessible and tourist-friendly than ever. Content source: AV Magazine
